TAPADA NACIONAL DE MAFRA

With 833 hectares of mature forest and almost three centuries of history, Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a living testimony to Portugal’s natural and cultural heritage. Once a leisure ground for the royal court, it is now a sustainably managed biodiversity sanctuary and a unique centre for nature research and conservation. Home to around 370 catalogued species, it reflects the perfect harmony between historical legacy and ecosystem preservation.
Through a diverse range of experiences, visitors are invited to explore this ancient forest, admire its beauty throughout the seasons, and discover the wildlife that roams freely within it.

• On foot – Explore the 6 signposted walking trails and discover the rich fauna, flora and historical heritage of the Tapada.
• By mountain bike (MTB) – Venture along 2 dedicated MTB trails and 2 additional cycling routes, through paths, climbs and descents that reveal the Tapada’s unique landscape.
• Running / Trail running – Run surrounded by nature on a dedicated trail-running route, with the option to use the other trails at your own pace.

PALÁCIO NACIONAL DE MAFRA

Commissioned by King João V in 1711, the Mafra Palace began construction on 17 November 1717, becoming one of the most remarkable expressions of Baroque architecture in Portugal and Europe, and a major testament to the royal power, faith and culture of the 18th century.

Designed as a palace, basilica and convent, this monumental complex brings together royal living quarters, important international collections of Italian sculpture, paintings, metalwork, goldsmithing and textiles, as well as an outstanding artistic and scientific heritage.

Among its highlights are the magnificent Library, the two carillons, regarded as one of the largest historical bell ensembles in the world, and the six organs of the Basilica, unique for their musical and artistic value. The site also preserves traces of Franciscan religious life, including the infirmary and apothecary, revealing the functional and symbolic complexity of this unique heritage asset. Designated a National Monument in 1907, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2019.

Historically, the palace is connected to the Jardim do Cerco and the Tapada, areas that can now be fully enjoyed under the new combined ticket, “Royal Building of Mafra – World Heritage”.


MUSEU NACIONAL DA MÚSICA

The National Museum of Music holds one of the richest European collections of musical instruments from the 16th to the 21st century, representing a wide range of musical practices, some of which are classified as “national treasures.”
Among the “national treasures” in its collection are instruments manufactured in Portugal, such as the harpsichord by Joaquim José Antunes (1758), and the violins and cellos by Joaquim José Galrão. Other instruments of great value and rarity include the Pascal Taskin harpsichord built in 1782 for the court of King Louis XVI of France, the Boisselot & Fils piano brought to Lisbon by Franz Liszt during his Iberian tour of 1844–1845, the baroque oboe by Eichentopf, and a cello by Antonio Stradivari that once belonged to King Luís of Portugal. The museum also preserves important archives, such as those of composer Alfredo Keil, author of the current Portuguese national anthem.
